Common Sense but Not Common to All

by:  Kent Mervin B. Pineda BSN 812

On the Sixth day of creation, God made the human beings: bestowing them with life, intellect and freewill. And in that intellect was the common sense, which is said to be the invulnerable part of his structure... but not for now.

In today’s time, a person’s common sense is being corrupted and vanishing due to different factors. Little by little, the individual becomes ignorant.

Taken for example a student who has a candy wrapper. Even though he knew that he should put it to trash or if not available put it on his pocket for later disposal, he will hesitate to do it for his common sense is not being used properly and it is being corrupted. Another is a certain individual saying “ Pagbilan nga po ng TRUST condom at HOPE cigarette.” Who will think that today, great virtues that are supposed to be possessed by a person would be associated to things, which bring about evil and danger, both physical and spiritual dimensions?

What has our world come to? Does it now prove that change is really the only thing certain in this world? What happened to the common sense that God gave us? Has it descended from the head to heel?

Dear people, there are only two reasons why all of these are happening. It is because of sophistication and materialism. Two factors indeed that affected the sense that was before common, but now is only possessed by a few.

Our experiences from antiquity up to now somehow teaches us not to weigh things anymore, because we presumed that we already know how to deal with I, since he has already experienced it in the pass. No need to think. No more of that 77 times of thinking, this is now where materialism takes the scene. In today’s epoch, instant things are very much well appreciated: instant noodles, message, drink, love, marriage and even baby, and especially the instant common sense. Where analysis and careful thought is gone, what is left is hasty and erroneous thinking.

Now, we know why our common sense seems to be not common. Our common sense is being vanished by worldliness. What is needed now is unity and prayer that we may go back to our senses --- and seek Him who is the source of all wisdom and righteousness. And if you are one of those who are losing this basic life essential, be alarmed. There’s something to be done!
